KOMEN FOUNDATION OFFERS COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS TO CHILDREN OF BREAST CANCER VICTIMS

Deadline: November 8, 2002.

The Komen Foundation is currently accepting applications for its College Scholarship Program. The program offers college scholarships of up to $10,000 a year, over a four- year period.

The purpose of the Susan G. Komen Foundation College Scholarship Award is to assist students who are the children of a parent who has died of breast cancer. Five scholarships of up to $10,000 in value will be awarded annually. The scholarships will be renewable upon satisfactory progress toward the completion of their degree.

The scholarship will be awarded to those eligible applicants dedicated to achieving a baccalaureate degree from an accredited state-supported college or university located in the applicant's state of residence. The determination of award recipients will be based on the evaluation of academic achievement, community service, and demonstrated leadership ability. The award is designed to provide funding to students who otherwise would find the cost of college attendance to be a significant burden or impossibility. In order to meet this goal, the applicant's financial circumstances will also be considered in determining eligibility for the award. Applicants at the Affiliate level may be required to participate in a personal interview with the local selection committee.

Finalists will be invited to Dallas, Texas to be interviewed by the Scholarship Award Committee at the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Headquarters.

In order to be eligible to receive a scholarship, an applicant must satisfy the following requirements: must have lost a parent to breast cancer; must reside within the service area of an established Komen Affiliate that is participating in the Scholarship Program; must be high school graduate, a high school student who ultimately graduates, or an applicant who has received the equivalent of a high school diploma; applicants who has been enrolled in college for at least two semesters or equivalent, must have a college GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale; must be a U.S. citizen, or documented permanent resident of the U.S. and of the state in which the college or university they plan to or currently attend is located; and must not have been or currently be subject to any disciplinary action by any institution or entity, including, but not limited to, any educational or law enforcement agency.
