SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL FOOD SAFETY EDUCATION MONTH

The National Food Safety Education Month (NFSEM) initiative focuses on heightening the awareness of the importance of food safety education and is sponsored by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.

The goal this year is to communicate to consumers that each of the food safety messages highlighted during the last four years, Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill, is necessary to keep food safe. The consumer theme for 2002-2003 is "Four Steps to Food Safety."

The following materials for food safety education are available from the Public Affairs Office of the FDA:
CD-ROM which contains media materials, ideas and tools for activities and events, Fight Bac!™ materials in English, Spanish, and Chinese, and an extensive list of FSIS' food safety publications on a variety of topics from product dating to food recalls and packing a safe lunch.

Fight Bac! ™ materials - brochures in English and Spanish, bookmarks, posters, and stickers. In addition, food safety kits for teachers are available.
