2005 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Soul Stroll for Health 2005?
Soul Stroll for Health 2005 is part of the African American Community’s “Building a Healthy Body and Soul Project,” the first community-based initiative to partner with African American, Hispanic and Pacific Islander churches to promote good nutrition and physical activity as keys to better health. Soul Stroll welcomes everyone.

When is it and where?
The community walk and health fair takes place:
Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Coyote Point Park, San Mateo.

What is the deadline for registration?
Advance registration is due May 9. The registration fee is $15. Please mail checks or money orders only. Advance registration for participants age 5 and older guarantees a free commemorative T-shirt, refreshments, gifts and other great prizes. Children under age 5 are free.

Will you accept drop-in registration?
Drop-in registration on the day of the event, May 21, also will be available. Cash will be accepted on the day of the event only. Neither late nor onsite registration guarantee a T-shirt, refreshments or prize-drawing entry.

What happens when I send registration in late?
Although late registrations are welcome, whether by mail or drop-in, they will neither guarantee a T-shirt, refreshments nor prize-drawing entry.

Why are you having this event?
The purpose of these events is to increase awareness about the importance of physical activity and health issues that disproportionately affect the African American community and other communities of color. To that end, the focus is on two components of the Surgeon General’s Healthy People 2010 Report: Obesity and physical activity.

Will there be activities just for kids?
Yes. In addition to a disc jockey, kids will have their very own directed play and group activities such as face painting, group games and more.

Will child care be available?
No. Parents are responsible for policing their own children before, during and after the event.

How do I get there?
From San Francisco (North), take 101 South to the Poplar Exit. Turn right onto Humboldt and proceed to Peninsula Ave. Turn right onto Peninsula Ave. Go over the freeway and then circle around and into the park.

From San Jose (South), take 101 North to the Dore Ave. exit. Immediately turn left onto north Bayshore Blvd. Turn right onto Coyote Point Drive and into the park.

Where do I park?
Follow the signs and volunteers’ directions.

What kinds of screenings will be available?
Health screenings include body mass index, body fat measurement, blood pressure and a blood glucose/cholesterol.

What kinds of information can I expect get at this event?
American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, National Kidney Foundation, and the Black Nurses Association will be among the many organizations providing public health information.

What kind of food will you have?
Community sponsors have donated beverages, juice, fruit and bagels for those who arrive early. Participants also will receive a box lunch after their walk.

What size shirts will you have?
From 5x to children’s medium. We will do our best to accommodate as many sizes as possible. However, there is no guarantee we will have enough of your size. First come will be first served.

How can I get a registration form if I didn’t get one in the mail?

How long does it take to walk the course?
At an average pace of three miles per hour, the five-mile course will take approximately one hour and 45 minutes; the three-mile course will take about one hour; and it will take about 30 minutes on the one-mile course.

Can I come in my wheelchair or walker?
Yes. For the community walk, the trails themselves are accessible to those with disabilities. However, please realize that the health fair portion of this event takes place on grass.

Can I bring my dog?
No. Pets are not allowed on the premises.

Can I ride my bike?
This is a community WALK, not ride. Please do not bring your bikes. We also anticipate seniors as well as little ones all along these trails. So for safety reasons, please do not bring a bike.

Can I bring my scooter, skateboard, roller blades/skates?
Again, this is a community WALK. So for safety reasons, please don’t bring any of these items.

Isn’t this a walkathon of some kind?
No. It is a not-for-profit health promotion event. It’s an easy and energizing community walk and information-packed health fair to promote good nutrition and physical activity as keys to better health.

How can vendors set up booths to sell products?
There are no commercial booths. However, we are always looking for more business sponsorships. If your business is interested in sponsoring this worthwhile community event, contact Gloria Brown at (650) 696-4378.

Do I have to pay for admission to the park?
No.

Is parking free?
While parking is free, carpooling and public transportation is strongly recommended. Please call SamTrans at (800) 660-4287 for more information.

Can I pay $5 and not get a shirt?
No. $15 supports this community-based event. To thank you, we provide the
T-shirt, which also commemorates the event.

Can I come on the day of the walk and just pay $5?
No. Again, $15 supports this community-based event. To thank you, we provide the T-shirt, which also commemorates the event.

Can I bring my lunch and not pay anything?
No.

Why can’t I get a T-shirt if I pay my $15 drop-in registration?
T-shirt production requires at least three weeks advance notice. We are basing our T–shirt count on preregistration numbers. If there are any extras, we will make them available.

Why pay any registration at all?
The nominal registration fee covers the cost of T-shirts and other event-related expenses. Moneys collected go directly back into the community to support other health-related events such as health screenings at local churches, Dining for Diabetes, Prostate Cancer Awareness Sunday, Breast Cancer Awareness Sunday, Women’s Heart Awareness Sunday and others.
